The Sikh clergy has directed the management of the Gurdwara Sachkhand Angitha Sahib in Sangrur to demolish all segments of the Sikh shrine that gave it a look of the Golden Temple.

At a meeting at the SGPC headquarters in Amritsar, the Jathedar Akal Takht directed the gurdwara management to change the design of the shrine by demolishing its domes and filling its sarovar (holy tank) with earth under the supervision of the SGPC.

Earlier, Akal Takht head priest Giani Gurbachan Singh had taken a strong exception to the Golden Temple replica being raised by the Gurdwara Sachkhand Angitha Sahib management.

The Akal Takht head priest also decided to summon Baba Baldev Singh Sahera, Dera head, Sachkhand, Mastuana, and all those responsible for replicating the Golden Temple.

He directed to change the name of the gurdwara from Sachkhand Mastuana to Gurdwara Singh Sabha, Mastuana. The Jathedar also directed the SGPC to ensure that Har ki Pauri, built on the pattern of the Golden Temple, be demolished. He ordered probe to identify forces behind the Golden Temple lookalike.

However, a majority of Sikh organisations participating in the Amritsar meeting wanted demolition of the entire structure of Mastuana’s Sikh shrine.

Some leaders blamed Akali Dal general secretary Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann for overlooking the replication.

Chairman of the Dharm Parchar Committee Tarsem Singh and Rajinder Singh Khalsa, president, Khalsa Panchayat, alleged that Dhindsa and Mann were present at the time of desilting of the sarovar at the shrine, but did not notice the glaring anomaly.

SGPC president Avtar Singh said the Mastuana management had failed to fulfil the commitment it made to  Akal Takht and SGPC in 1996, that the architecture of the Sikh shrine at Mastuana would be changed. He warned that this time the management must not defy Sikh sentiments on the matter.
