The much awaited report of the Supreme Court appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) relating to the role of chief minister Narendra Modi and 62 others in the 2002 riots was submitted before the local magisterial court on Wednesday evening.

Sources familiar to the development said that the report by SIT may not suggest any incriminating evidence against Modi and others and file its closure report. Now the magisterial court has to decide how to proceed further on the report. The court will likely conduct its hearing on the report on Thursday.

SIT member Himanshu Shukla confirmed that the report, in a sealed cover, has been submitted before the metropolitan court number 11 on Wednesday evening. However, he refused to divulge any of its contents.

The report has been awaited since last year when the Supreme Court directed SIT to submit a report before the magisterial court which will now decide the fate of Modi and 62 others according to the complaint filed by Zakia Jafri, widow of the slain parliamentarian, Ahesan Jafri.

According to sources, SIT has filed its closure report as they now found evidence indicating complicity of members of the high echelons of the state in the infamous Gulbarg society massacre that took place on February 28, 2002.

Zakia Jafri's complaint has alleged the CM Narendra Modi, his ministers and top IAS and IPS officers played a malicious role in the 2002 riots in the state.

Sources in SIT have said that the cops have found that Ahesan Jafri had made no calls either to the then police commissioner PC Pande and chief minister Narendra Modi on February 28, 2002. The SIT may file this detail in the closure report.

SIT is investigating the post Godhra riot cases, after the Supreme Court directed it to investigate Zakia Jafri's complaint filed by her. The Civil Rights Activists meanwhile agitated against SIT's filing of the closure report and some of the activists may meet Raghavan in the next few days.
