The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sabarmati Express train carnage case had placed a report disclosing the communal sensitive history of Godhra city.

The SIT had put many incidents of communal clashes that happened in the city from 1965 onwards.

The judge has mentioned in the conclusion of the order that Godhra is known for its past history of communal riots. For Godhra, this is not the first incident of burning alive innocent people belonging to the Hindu community.

According to sources connected with the case, "the prosecution had put history of communal riots in Godhra from 1965 to 1992. Some of these incidents were also mentioned in the report."

It is pertinent to note that the prosecution put the report as it claimed that the motive behind the killing was to take revenge on the karsevaks who went to attend a yagna for a drive to build the Ram Temple at the disputed Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya.

There have been incidents like the killing of five Hindu teachers in a madressa run by a member of the Bohra community. The incident happened in 1989 and all the accused were acquitted.

In the same way, a couple of incidents of killing members of the Muslim community by Hindu people were mentioned.

On the other side, defence counsels also highlighted the communal past of Godhra and said the police had put up 'selected’ witnesses against the accused.

IM Munshi, one of the defence lawyers, argued that, "In this case the police have shown 38 witnesses of the Sindhi community and it is also an admitted fact that as they are residing about 2 to 3 kms away from the railway police station, they were called from their residence."

He also submitted that, "It is also an admitted fact that since 1947 there is enmity between Sindhi and Muslim communities. The police have 'selected' these Sindhi witnesses, which is also a part of the conspiracy hatched by the police against the Muslims."
