In a bid to keep in check the "inappropriate behaviour" of tourists visiting the Basilica of Bom Jesus, one of Goa’s most famous churches, the church authorities are mulling over imposition of a strict code of ethics.

The church, which is located 9km away from here, is known for housing the mortal remains of St Francis Xavier, a saint who is worshipped all over the world.

The basilica's rector Fr Savio Barretto said that the necessity for the code has emerged after it was found that tourists- domestic and foreigners alike- indulge in unethical behaviour on the premises of the Church during their visit.

The church is a part of protected monuments and is being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

"They (tourists) shout, take pictures, behave inappropriately, hence, it is time to implement a strict code of conduct for them," he said adding that dresses of some of the tourists do not go well with the sanctity of the place.

One of the temples in Goa, Mahalsa Narayani at Mardol, had banned the entry of foreigners on its premises, after the temple authorities objected to their dresses and behaviour.

Fr Barretto said that in the past, the basilica had hired a person, who used to screen visitors before they were allowed inside. "We are trying to revive that system again," he said.

The priest is also disturbed, as tourists continue to photograph inside the church, despite a ban on it.
