Around 100 undergraduate students of Government Physiotherapy College gathered at the Gujarat University, to demand for a rise in number of postgraduate seats for their course in the college.

Currently, the college has 15 seats for the post graduate (PG) course, which according to the students is less, especially when the undergraduate course - BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy), has 100 seats.

The students presented a memorandum to the vice-chancellor, who promised to look into the matter. They are hoping that the university will sort out the problem within the end of the month.

The Government Physiotherapy College at the New Civil Hospital began the PG course, in 2005, with 18 seats. The strength of the under graduate (UG) course was 40 back then. But after a year, the college received permission to increase the number of seats in the UG course to 100. The number of PG seats remained the same. Worse, the seats were reduced to 15 as one of the lecturers resigned.

According to the university rule, there should be only 3 students under one lecturer. Right now, the college has only 5 lecturers. "We are looking at the technicalities of the matter, and will consider recruiting new teachers if required," said the V-C.

However, students said there is no such 1:3 rule. "If the university wants, it can up the ratio to 1:10. Thus they can increase the number of seats without recruiting new teachers," said a student.
Students are also worried about the 8 seats for non-Gujaratis in the PG course. "New rules suggest that 50% seats be filled up by students from outside Gujarat. Hence, students from Gujarat will only have 8 seats," said a third year student of BPT.

The students are also demanding a separate statutory body for physiotherapy. "Decision for the nursing course is also applicable to us. To avoid this there must be a statutory body like AICTE or MCI for us," said a first year student.

Students are hoping that the V-C will take a decision before January 30, as many final year students will appear for the pre-PG entrance test on the same day. Students are also unhappy with their principal who they allege is not taking the matter seriously.

"The V-C told us that he wants a formal request letter from our principal, but we don't know when will she file the letter," said a student.

The students are also planning to meet education minister and education secretary in Gandhinagar, tomorrow.
