The home ministry has a new ‘surrender policy’ to attract Maoists into the mainstream. Some of the key components include imparting them with vocational training and even offering them handsome incentives for every weapon they deposit with the security forces.

Buoyed by the success of their surrender policy in Jammu and Kashmir and some North-Eastern states, the Centre has given final touches to the plan as part of its multi-pronged policy to curb red-terror. Every surrendered weapon will have a price tag in addition to the other incentives the surrendered Maoist will accrue under the new guidelines, ministry sources said.

In the surrendered weapons category, the highest price tag is placed on sniper rifle/Picca rifle/UMG/GPMG. Here, the Maoist will get Rs25,000 for every gun he surrenders. Next in line are the SAM missiles. For each surrendered piece he will get Rs20,000.

For every AK- 47/56 and 74 rifle he surrenders, he will get Rs15,000 per piece. Surrendering a satellite phone will fetch the insurgent Rs10,000, while handing over a grenade and a remote-control device will fetch him Rs5,000 and Rs3,000 per piece.

However, those Maoists who surrender without arms will be able to avail the benefits of the rejuvenated rehabilitation scheme. They will be imparted vocational training and will also earn a monthly stipend of Rs2,000 for three years. The stipend will be discontinued after the trainee gets a government job.

Every surrendered Maoist will also be entitled to an immediate grant of Rs1.50 lakh, which will be kept in a bank as a fixed deposit for three years.
