A four-year-old girl was today rescued from a 48-feet deep borewell in which she remained trapped for 19 hours after a fall and was rushed to a Jaipur hospital where doctors said her condition is expected to improve by tomorrow.

The rescue team pulled out the trapped girl, Anju, in an unconscious state after digging a tunnel parallel to the borewell in Moradi village in this district, collector Jogaram said.

The child was taken out at 12.25 hours and shifted in an ambulance to JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur, he said. Anju had fallen into the borewell at around 5.30 pm yesterday while she was playing there.

"She is in a conscious state. However, she is not out of danger completely," Dr BD Sinha, Superintendent of the hospital, said.

"Her body temperature and heart beat are above normal, but she is expected to improve within 24 hours," he said.

A team of eight doctors consisting of pediatricians and surgeons is monitoring the girl who is being given intravenous fluids and oxygen, he added.

Earlier, the authorities pressed into service digging and other machines for the rescue operation.

As the rescuers reached the depth where she was stuck at, Anju was transferred to the rescue tunnel by digging a hole between the tunnel and the borewell.

Members of an emergency response team and officials of health, police and other government departments concerned have been camping since yesterday in the area, adjoining Jaipur.

An oxygen pipe was put into the borewell to help the girl breathe while water, milk and food were made available to her using a rope.

In October last year, a two-year-old boy, Sonu, had died after falling into a borewell in Agra.

Five-year-old Prince had made headlines after falling into a 60-ft deep borewell in Hardaheri village near Kurukshetra in Haryana in July 2006 and was brought out alive after an operation lasting 48 hours.
