A 20-year-old girl was beheaded by unidentified persons at her residence in east Delhi, police said today.

The incident was reported from Madhu Vihar police station area last night.

Unidentified persons killed Avantika Singh by beheading her with a sharp-edged weapon and managed to walk away from there after locking the main door of the house from outside, police said.

Avantika, a resident of Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, had been living in the rented house with her elder sister Preeti for the last one and a half months. She was employed with a business establishment at a shopping mall in Shahdara while her sister was working as a supervisor in a factory in Noida.

Preeti was not at home when the incident took place.

One Buddha Prakash, a family friend, informed the police about the incident. Prakash said he was calling up Avantika on her mobile phone and as she did not respond, he contacted Preeti and subsequently reached the house along with her to find that she had been murdered, a senior police officer said.

"Available circumstances indicate that the perpetrator was well-known to the victim and had a friendly entry to the house. We are investigating the case," he said.
