Seven people, including a local Congress leader, have been arrested in connection with the clash between police and locals in which 12 people were injured in Birno area here, police said today.

Local Congress leader Shailesh Singh and six others were arrested yesterday and a hunt is on for the remaining accused, they said.

On Saturday, the locals had staged a protest after Dharmendra Bind (35), principal of RN Public School, was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his residence in Kahotari village.

Locals had placed Bind's body in front of the police station and staged a demonstration demanding compensation, while police claimed it was a suicide case.

Police claimed they had to use force to control the situation, which lead to heavy brick batting and injuries to 12 people, after the irate mob vandalised the police station and torched some vehicles.

Locals alleged two persons, Sukhuram (35) and Imtiyaz (22), had sustained bullet injuries in police firing.

IG (Varanasi range) RP Singh has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
