The incident took place while ONGC officials were drilling at one of its gas wells in Telawa village near Ankleshwar.
Gas leakage accompanied by spurting of water resulted in a minor scare among residents of Telawa village near Ankleshwar on Saturday. The incident occurred while ONGC officials were drilling gas at one of its wells located at the village. No casualty was reported and ONGC has initiated repairing work to prevent any such unwanted incidents.
ONGC had started drilling work at its well located at Telawa village, on Saturday morning, to trace gas. While they were drilling the gas deposit 150 metres below ground, gas suddenly started to come out with high pressure. Gas spurted 25-30 feet high, along with water and other particles. Chemical mud, which is used by ONCG for covering gaps while drilling, also came out along with gas.
This sudden spurting frightened workers, who fled from the spot. They informed higher authorities, who rushed to the spot. Top officials investigated the situation and started rescue work in the field. According to them, the entire incident happened naturally and there was no human error.
"Drilling was going on at 150 metres beneath the ground and was done to explore more gas from the well and adjoining land. While the process was going on, gas came out with high pressure," LM Joshi, communications head of ONGC (Ankleshwar), said.
Joshi added that no casualties had been reported in the incident and the situation was brought under control by 8pm.
The incident came as a shock to local residents, who feared that incidents like Olpad, where gas is coming out from ground, may occur. Interestingly, Telawa is just 20 km from Olpad. "We were really surprised, when we saw gas coming out in such huge proportion. ONGC must take care while doing any exploration process. A slight error can lead to big accidents," Pravin Rathod, a resident of Telawa, said.
