The Corporation of City of Panaji has stopped collecting garbage after it lost the dumping site to a protest by locals. "The garbage would not be cleared till we get an
alternative dumping site," Mayor Caroline Po told PTI.

After they lost the dumping site at Campal to protests by locals, the civic body has stopped collecting garbage. As a resulting many parts are littered with garbage heaps and city air is heavy with stink. The CCP was accommodating the untreated garbage at
Campal, a residential area in the city. The locals protested after rains created filth around their houses.

CCP has to deal with around 40 tonnes of garbage generated from households, market and hotels. "We manage to dispose of certain quantity of garbage through the composting units set up in wards. But the major portion remains to be managed," Po said.

As the garbage crisis continued haunting the city, the main Opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party today gunned for the head of CCP Commissioner Melwyn Vaz. "The commissioner should be replaced with an efficient IAS officer who can handle the crisis," Leader of Opposition and local MLA Manohar Parrikar told reporters this afternoon.

Former Chief Minister Parrikar said he has extended all possible help to the CCP to solve the crisis but the Corporation lacks follow up. The Commissioner either has to solve the problem or quit, Parrikar added.
