Describing the alleged gangrape of a teenager in the city as an unfortunate incident, Gujarat Minister of State for Home Amit Shah on Sunday said the case will be tried in a fast-track court. "It is unfortunate that such an incident took place. At the same time I am happy that the city crime branch, within hours of the incident, was able to identify and arrest the persons responsible for it," Shah told reporters here.

"This case will be run in a fast-track court and we will seek maximum punishment for the accused. The fact that two of the accused are kins of police personnel will be not affect
the probe in the case. It has been assured that there will be no lapse in investigation," he said.

Three persons Sahid Saiyed, Tariq Saiyed and Abu Bakr allegedly abducted a 17-year-old class XII student and raped her in a moving car in the city on June 12. The three arrested accused were sent to police custody for 14 days by a local court on Saturday.

Following the gangrape, protests and agitation continued throughout the day. The three accused were thrashed by people when they were being taken to city civil hospital for a
medical check-up. Various city organisations including the VHP have called for a bandh in the city tomorrow to condemn the incident. Shah, who rushed to the city on Saturday evening, said following the arrest of the accused, some of the organisations have withdrawn the bandh call.

"I have been informed that many organisation have withdrawn the bandh call for tomorrow. I would also like other organisations to withdraw bandh call as peaceful environment is necessary for conducting proper investigation," he said. However, VHP sources said that they have not withdrawn bandh call for Monday.

On the transfer of Police Commissioner Deepak Swaroop who allegedly made controversial remarks following the incident, Shah said it was done keeping people's sentiments in mind. "Commissioner's (Swaroop's) transfer decision was taken
after considering sentiments of the people and the law and order situation in the city," he said.

Swaroop reportedly told a local news channel that the victim was caught in a compromising position with her male classmate by the accused, who took advantage of the situation. Subsequently, Surat range IG Shivanand Jha has been assigned the charge of the city police commissioner.

The minister said forensic science experts have collected samples from the car in which the crime was committed. Asked if there would be any guidelines issued for coaching classes with regards to their timings for girl students, he said talks with the owners of coaching classes would be held in a couple of days.
