Ahmedabad: A gang of young boys and girls luring the elderly into sexual activities and then blackmailing them was recently caught by the Vejalpur police. Further investigations have revealed that the gang has spread its roots far and wide in the city.

The modus operandi of the gang included luring the elderly with promise of
sexual favours. Once the elderly were in a compromising position with a woman,
one of the gang members would take a video of the encounter. They would then blackmail the elderly person, who often paid up for fear of being exposed.

Police sources said that often the girls in the gang would pick elderly men who went out for their morning or evening walks. Temples were another favourite hunting ground for these girls. They operated in areas like Satellite, Navrangpura, Anjali crossroads, Vasna, Ellisbridge and Chandkheda.

"The members of the gang targeted senior citizens near temples, gardens and AMTS bus stands. So far four such cases have come to our notice," said BR Mackwana, PSI Vejalpur. He said there could be many more such cases but it is difficult to know as the victims prefer to remain silent. In many cases the parents of the girls are not aware about their work.

Sources said that the female members of the gang belong to areas like Amraiwadi, Maninagar, Danilimda, Hatkeshwar and Vatwa. They take to such activities to earn quick bucks, saida source.

"We will not be able to put an end to the activities of the gang if people refuse to come out and register a complaint," said Mackwana.

Dr. Prashant Bhimani, consulting psychologist said that many factors lead the elderly to such liaison. "Often many of these men are extremely lonely or are in a relation that is not satisfying. Some feel that at their age they can do anything."
