In an attempt to curb rising incidence of break-ins in Bopal police have come out of their police stations and are taking the streets to help people protect their homes while on a holiday.

In a first-of-its-kind, but rather regressive initiative, Bopal police, for four days, had hired an auto-rickshaw and installed a sound system in it to blare information to people about what to do in case of thefts at their places.

As per the announcements, cops requested residents to inform them if they are going out of station. Even telephone numbers of Bopal police station and the police inspector was made known to the public, rather loudly.

The initiative follows a guideline issued by range inspector general GS Malik in light of rise in number of incidences of robberies taking place in Bopal. It should be noted that last month alone, around 7-8 incidents of house break-in were reported from Bopal. Some 131 societies are scattered in remote areas of Bopal.

"Thanks to the announcement, we receive an average 10-15 calls a day from residents informing us about their absence from home," said BK Rana, police inspector with Bopal police station, adding that residents inform again after they return back home.

"We maintain a diary of those who inform us about their leave from the city and inform the security at the society about it as well. We also conduct regular patrolling in the area," said Rana.

Several residents did not even know where the Bopal police station was. "Thanks to the announcements, they keep in touch. We hope to curb theft and house break-ins in the area (using this method)," said the cop.

Moreover, police will use 2,000 stickers informing residents in the area about this initiative. The stickers will be stuck on the walls and gates of the societies. Bopal residents can inform the police about their not being at home by calling their police station on 02717-293040 or the police inspector on 9537033033.
