Commuters can look forward to less jerky rides on the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). No, it is not that the Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) is resurfacing washed out roads but has in fact started a rigorous training for drivers- known as System Operators - for BRTS. The aim is to improvise their driving skills.

The AJL came up with the training after around 15 trained drivers left the company. Expansion of BRTS service has also resulted in new bunch of drivers being recruited. The training for 40 drivers began on Thursday at the AMC's Usmanpura office.

The AJL officials said the drivers underwent a theory class on Thursday and from Friday, onwards will get practical training on the BRTS corridor for two days.  The drivers are being trained by the Delhi-based Society for Indian Automobile Manufacturers under the guidance of international organization- Herbert Abner. AJL had provided smart trainings to all its drivers when it launched the service in October last year. This included improvising their driving skills, yoga to maintain their health and concentration among others.

But lately, of the total 23 trained drivers, around 15 left and absence of any training for the newly recruited drivers resulted in rising complaints of rash driving. Executive director, AJL, UC Padia said they were aware of the issue of untrained drivers.

“We have decided that there is a need for training session every four months," he said.Despite the high attrition among drivers, the AJL has not bothered to introduce the contract system while hiring them.

"It is not the AJL that trains the drivers but the bus operation contractor. So, the AJL is not spending any money on their training. But it is true that higher attrition affects bus services," said Padia.

As part of the training, the drivers will be taught about public behavior, road use behavior, safe driving, first aid, traffic rules, vehicle checking and maintenance among others.
