Freed fidayeen back in Lashkar den

Lashkar-e-Toiba fidayeen Mohammad Imran who was acquitted and deported to Pakistan has reunited with his handlers in the neighbouring country, raising questions on the government which failed to prove a case against him.

“Mohammad Imran who is known by the name of fidayeen in Indian jails came back to us (Lashkar) after he was released from the Srinagar central jail last month. He is a simple mujahid (jihadi) who does not know the contours of politics and political system. Soon after coming to us he said we are committing mistake by supporting the (separatist) political leaders. Some of them are hand in glove with India…” reads a Lashkar-e-Toiba report submitted to Jamait Ahle Hadees over the killing of Moulana Showkat Ahmad Shah.

Imran, one of the few fidayeens arrested alive, was apprehended during a suicide attack in high security Indira Nagar locality of Srinagar in November 2003. An army major, two CRPF jawans and a BSNL employee were killed in the attack.

Imran was detained under the Public Safety Act and his trial continued for eight years.

“It is the failure of the government which could not prove their case against him,” a lawyer said.
