Four Gujarat govt medical colleges short of staff

Four government medical colleges - the ones in Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Jamnagar - are on an average short of 110 people.

Even as the state government promises to double the number of seats in medical colleges of the state, the data tabled in the assembly shows a woeful shortage of teaching staff in four major government medical colleges of Gujarat.

The state health department tabled the details on Friday in the question answer session. Four government medical colleges - the ones in Surat, Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Jamnagar - are on an average short of 110 people. The staff shortage has been pegged at around 15.67% in the state.

This includes both teaching and non-teaching staff.

Several MLAs had asked questions related to the same to state health minister Jaynarayan Vyas.

Jayesh Radadya MLA of Dhoraji had asked about vacant posts in government medical colleges in Surat while Babu Meghji Shah, MLA of Rapar, questioned about the staff shortage in Ahmedabad's government medical college.

Bavku Undhad, MLA of Babara sought information on the status of Vadodara's government college and Dheerubhai Bheel, MLA from Naswadi asked questions about the status of Jamnagar's government medical college.

In reply to the same, the state government put a list of approved cadre posts in the colleges and details of vacant posts in these colleges and its status uptil December 31, 2010.

It should be noted that the reply on vacant posts included both teaching and non-teaching staff.  Yet the vacant posts for professors, associate professors, assistant professors and number of tutors are significant.

The Jamnagar Medical College is facing a shortage of 13 professors, 21 associate professors and 32 assistant professors in different departments, which is the highest among all the  four medical colleges.

Ahmedabad's government medical college is short of 4 professors, 7 associate professors, 21 assistant professors in various departments.

Surat Medical College has an approved staff of 601 from class 1 to class 4 cadre of state government but 104 posts are vacant.
Similarly, there are 831 approved posts in the BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad and 104 of them are vacant.

Vadodara has comparatively less number of vacant posts. The government medical college in Vadodara has an approved staff of 669 and 86 posts are still vacant. Jamnagar has the maximum number of vacant posts.

The government medical college in Jamnagar has 734 approved posts and it has 148 vacant posts.
