British police has arrested four persons in connection with the murder of an Indian-origin garage owner, who was stabbed after resisting a carjacking attempt by a gang.

32-year-old Harjinder Singh Bhurji died after being stabbed by the gang of robbers, who dragged his woman friend out from the front seat of his Mercedes CLK coupe before attacking him.

Bhurji, who was single, was sitting in his sports car in Clayhall, near Ilford, East London, talking to his friend early on Tuesday morning when a robber opened the passenger door and dragged her out from the car.

He initially tried to hide the car keys under his seat but the robber threatened to harm his friend if he did not hand them over.

He was attacked as he tried to retrieve the keys before the thief drove off with the car. The police said "three men - aged 20, 19 and 17 - were arrested on suspicion of murder by detectives investigating the murder" and remain in custody.

"A fourth man arrested with them but on suspicion of handling stolen goods in relation to a separate matter has now also been arrested on suspicion of murder. He also remains in custody," a police official said.

Bhurji, who owned a garage and lived near by, was stabbed in the chest.

His best friend, Gurmit Birdi, in whose upcoming wedding in India Bhurji was due to act as best man, said his family was "distraught".

"He was a very nice person, he never did anything wrong. He lived his life and enjoyed his life, he was a happy person... I can't even think straight. God knows what his family are going through," Birdi said.

Bhurji was pronounced dead at the scene after police were called at 1:10am. The car was later found abandoned in another locality of East London at 2:45am.

His friend, who witnessed Bhurji being stabbed and killed, was not injured but suffering from shock.
