A teenage girl, who had gone to consult an astrologer to find out whether she would be happy if she married her fiancée, was shocked when the astrologer allegedly asked her to strip and then began touching her body. The girl, a second-year student of Akhandanand College, has filed a complaint at the Navrangpura police station against the astrologer accusing him of molestation.

The girl, 18-year-old Rakhi (name changed), lives with her sister and widowed mother. On December 31, 2010, she had gone to consult one Alam Pathan, an astrologer working at the astrological consultations office called 'Guru Kamal Pasha Jyotish', when the alleged molestation occurred.

"When the astrologer found that she was alone, he asked her to take off her clothes and then began touching her body claiming that it was some kind of religious rite that he was performing," a source in the police said. The girl has mentioned one Alam Pathan as the astrologer who had tried to molest her, the source said.

The source further said that the women sitting at the reception of the astrologer's office had asked the girl to take off her jacket and then go inside a room.

The girl initially did as the astrologer demanded but when he began to touch
her body, she fled from the room. "She mentioned the entire episode to her fiancée who asked her to file a complaint with the police," the source said.
After the complaint was filed, two police constables, Mayurdan Gadhvi and Jaydevdan Gadhvi, went as dummy customers to the astrologer's office and nabbed Pathan from there.

The Navrangpura police have registered a case of molestation. The source said preliminary investigation had revealed that Pathan lives in Jamalpur but is originally from Uttar Pradesh. He earns his livelihood through astrology.
The police produced Pathan in the metropolitan magistrate court on Monday afternoon but they did not seek his custody on remand. Hence, the court ordered that Pathan be sent to judicial custody.

However, as the charges on which he was arrested are bailable, Pathan's lawyer immediately applied for bail. In his bail petition, Pathan said he was innocent and had been falsely implicated in the case. Moreover, as the legal sections under which he had been arrested are bailable, he should be granted bail, the astrologer stated. The court then released Pathan on a bail bond of Rs2,500.
