With most of the street-scaping projects running behind schedule, a wary Delhi government has asked the agencies to focus on completing construction in and around the sports venues and the Commonwealth Games Village.

"I have instructed the PWD and other concerned agencies to first concentrate on completing street-scaping and signage job in and around the Games Village and venue as they will be in the spotlight during the sporting extravaganza," chief secretary Rakesh Mehta said today.

Given the time constraints, the agencies for the time being can take a break from the peripheral areas like Ring Road and expedite work in and around stadia and other Games venues which will be the centre of attraction, he added.

"The work at not-so important areas can be resumed once the Games are over," he said.

Mehta said August 31 has been fixed for completing road signages projects to ensure an international look to the city ahead of the mega sporting event slated for October 3-14 which is expected to draw a large number of tourists, including foreigners.

He said that he has been undertaking frequent inspections to review the progress and much remained to be done on the street-scaping front around the Games venues like stadia.

The official cited a PWD report which has pointed out that several projects of street-scaping, road signages, horticulture development, street lighting and beautification of flyovers were running behind the schedule.

Meanwhile, the government has asked various agencies such as MTNL, BSES, NDPL, DIMTS, traffic police and DTL, who have been engaged in road-cutting and digging, to restore the roads by July 31.
