There’s good news for students who will appear for the 10th standard exams this March. The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) at its annual general meeting on Friday decided that the students who fail in two subjects can also reappear in the June exams.

Earlier, only those students who failed in one subject were allowed to reappear in the exams. However, this new system will apply only for the five main subjects taken by the education board.

This new practice was recommended by Bhaskar Patel, executive board member of GSHSEB and will be implemented from the present academic year itself. Students who will appear for the March 2011 exams and fail in two subjects, can appear for the supplementary exams in June, so they will not have to waste a year.

This practice is prevalent in Rajasthan and Maharashtra and is being implemented for the first time in Gujarat.

Principal secretary of the state education department, Hasmukh Adhia said that every year many students fail in two subjects.

“A large number of students every year fail in two subjects of the 10th Board. So, instead of taking supplementary exam for one subject, we decided to take a similar exam for two subjects. Hence, this year we thought to bring this new change about so
as to ease the students’ situations,” he added.

Interestingly, last year the number of students who failed in only one subject was 91,000. Against this, the number of students who failed in two subjects in addition to the initial figures were a whopping 1, 07,000.

Under the new mechanism, the school authorities, along with the result of 10th, will get hall tickets for students mentioning failure in two subjects. This will be easy for the school as well as the Board to conduct exams.

The students have welcomed the new mechanism. Gururaj D, a student of 10th standard said, "This will help reduce stress among the students." Another student, Naresh Sankhlecha expressed his happiness and said, "Now I'm more relaxed with the new decision. It's really good on the part of GSHSEB to bring about this new decision."

Another decision taken by the Board pertained to the blind students, in which it was decided that blind students appearing in the 10th Board will be given the liberty to appear for exams from its school itself. The reason for this decision is that blind students find it difficult to move from one school to another for their seating arrangement. However, this decision will be implemented from March 2012.
