With Amdavadis busy reveling during the Navratri, the thieves in the city are having a field day. In a failed attempt, a gang of five youths attempted to loot a Union Bank of India ATM centre near Ambawadi Circle late on Saturday night. The gang attacked the centre's 25-year-old security guard, tied him up and threatened to kill him if he cried out for help.
According to the complaint filed at Gujarat University (GU) police station by the security guard, Laxman Rajput, on Saturday night a group of five boys came to the ATM centre. They asked Rajput for some water claiming they were unable to get any elsewhere.
When the kind-hearted Rajput entered the ATM centre to fetch them water, they attacked him. One of the boys covered the guard's mouth while the other tied his hands and legs and another sat on his stomach and stabbed him. They then tied up the injured guard and locked him in an adjoining room.
While three of the five stayed in the centre to get the money, two stayed out to keep a watch. Just as they were about to break into the ATM, they saw a group approaching towards them. Fearing getting caught, the gang left the ATM without taking anything.
However, Rajput then crawled out to the street and screamed for help. The passersby saw him and called the police control room.
The police immediately came and registered a case against the five unknown people.
Meanwhile on September 25, in a similar fashion, some unknown people attempted to loot an ATM in Vaishnodevi Complex on the Kalol Highway. The ATM centre did not have any security guard but was saved as the thieves could not break into the ATM machine.
