“His security includes not only Delhi Police personnel but men of central paramilitary and the elite national security guard too. Hi-tech security gadgets are being used. A total of 9,000-10,000 personnel have been deployed across the city. At any point, there are over 1,000 security men from different agencies guarding the US president,” top Delhi Police sources told DNA.
Obama arrived in Delhi on Sunday afternoon to a warm welcome by prime minister Manmohan Singh and his wife. The Obamas then went to the US embassy and later to Humayun’s Tomb.
After spending nearly 40 minutes at the Humayun’s Tomb, he left for hotel Maurya Sheraton where his lodging arrangements have been fixed.
Snipers were deployed at building rooftops all along the route the president’s convoy would take. Nearly 50 quick reaction teams (QRTs) and SWAT (special weapon and tactics) teams have been deployed. “Both carriageways were closed on the routes taken by him and some of the arterial roads were also blocked.
“There are five layers of security. Inner rings comprise US security personnel, including officers of the US’s secret service,” officials said.
“The security arrangements are elaborate and foolproof. Over 2,000 personnel are guarding the Maurya Sheraton hotel itself where Obama is staying. During the stay, there would be hundreds of security personnel inside the ridge area opposite the hotel. It has also been lit up after US officials voiced concern about it a few days ago,” the sources said.
“When the president pays homage at Rajghat, there will security at the memorial and across the Yamuna river. Rajghat is also out of bound for general public. Security has been further beefed up at parliament which is already a high security place,” the sources added.
US secret service, Indian intelligence agencies and Delhi Police are closely coordinating to provide foolproof security. “His security teams had come weeks before and had finalised all details, including his primary and alternative routes of travel,” sources said.
The security agencies are also ensuring foolproof security for US first lady Michelle Obama as she is expected to have her own programme.
