First Maoist surrender in West Midnapore

Nearly a month after the West Bengal government announced a rehabilitation package for ultras who give up arms, a Maoists today surrendered before police in West Midnapore district.
 
"Shobhan Karak alias Bijoy, a Maoist squad member, surrendered with arms at the district Police Lines," superintendent of police Manoj Kumar Verma told PTI.
 
Bijoy was a resident of Goyaltore in the district, he said.
 
"We will make a fixed deposit of 1.5 lakh in his name for three years and refer the case to rehabilitation committee," Verma said.
 
Once the rehabilitation committee cleared the case, the Maoist would get a monthly remuneration of Rs2000 per month for three years and vocational training of his choice, he said.
 
"In the next seven to ten day we hope many more Maoists will surrender," he added.
