Two rounds of bullets were fired at Jain Derasar at Nandigram village near Bhilad in Valsad district, after a tussle ensued between Jain saints and devotees over placing ‘dhwaja’ (flag) over temple. Timely arrival of police saved the situation from taking any ugly turn. One Jain sadhu was injured in the incident, while two security guards have been arrested.

A function was organised at Simandhar Swami Jain Derasar, also know at Nandigram Derasar, on Wednesday to celebrate its 22nd foundation day. Jain devotees from all across the state and Maharashtra were present in huge numbers to celebrate the function under the blessings of Jain saint Acharya Shivsagar. The situation became tense as soon as Shivsagar asked persons other than Gogalia Parivar to place the ‘dhwaja’ upon the temple.
Members of Gogalia Parivar, who happens to be the trustee of the temple, objected to the move, which resulted in heated argument and later a big fight. With the help of supporters, Parivar members beat Shivsagar and his disciples. Angered with the attack, the latter also asked his supporters to retaliate.

Soon, there was pandemonium on the temple campus and to bring the situation under control, two security guards of Shivsagar fired two rounds. One of the bullets hit a Jain saint, leading to head injuries.

Police rushed to the spot after learning about the incident and resorted to light lathi-charge to control the situation. Cops also arrested two guards for firing and registered a case of rioting against Shivsagar and Gogalia Parivar.

Sources said that Gogalia Parivar used to place five out of nine ‘dhawajas’ upon temple. The tradition continued for the past 21 years, but on Wednesday, Shivsagar changed the rule and asked other devotees to conduct the ritual. This angered the members, who protested the move.
