Cricketgate has further sullied the image of the ruling National Conference (NC) as new documents show that its president and Union minister for new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah, who is also the president of J&K Cricket Association (JKCA), recommended raising a loan of Rs1.90 crore against fixed deposits which was credited to the account of disgraced treasurer Ahsan Mirza.

The scam also rocked the assembly with main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) moving an adjournment motion to discuss the issue. However the speaker rejected the motion triggering protests from the PDP members who later staged a walk out against the move.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti demanded CBI probe into the scam, akin to the Commonwealth Games scam, to probe the whole rot in the J& K Cricket Association. The PDP leader also circulated the letter in which the manager of the J&K Bank’s Khanyar branch wrote: “On the authority of letter issued by honorable president JKCA the loan of  Rs1.9 crore was raised against own deposits of the association on July 3, 2008 and proceeds whereof were credited to Current Account No. 90695 of Ahsan Mirza maintained with the business unit.”

Chairman of JKCA Mohammad Aslam Goni however rubbished the charges saying, “since the JKCA accounts were seized by the court as litigation was going on and there was nothing for it at that time to operate therefore a letter was written requesting Mirza to give interest-free loan to cricket body for running its affairs.”

“Mirza was spending money from his own pocket. Till the stay was vacated, it (Mirza’s loan) had accumulated to Rs1.91 crore. A resolution was then passed by office bearer that since we owe this money to Mirza for which he had submitted accounts therefore the money should be returned. On this basis Farooq wrote to the bank asking to raise loan of Rs1.91 crore in favour of Mirza against FDI since there was no money in the current account at that time,” Goni said.

However, a few days back the JKCA chairman had also blamed the then general secretary Salim Khan and the treasurer Ahsan Mirza for opening “bogus accounts and thereafter illegally operated them without reflecting these bank accounts in the balance sheet.” The irregularities have given new ammunition to the opposition who has already been gunning for the NC-led government since the death of Haji Mohammad Yousuf.
