As farmers' protests spread to new areas today, the Uttar Pradesh government announced rewards for the arrest of six persons including peasant leader Manvir Singh Tewatia for clashing with police and attributed the stir to "political ambitions" of some persons, claiming that land aquisition was not an issue.

"A reward of Rs50 thousand has been declared on Manvir Singh Tevatia, while Rs15,000 for one Premveer and Neeraj Malik and Rs 10,000 each on Gaje Singh, Kiranpal and Manoj", cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said.

"The incident took place due to political ambitions of some persons. I will not like to elaborate", Singh said.

Claiming that the situation in Gautam Buddha Nagar was normal, Singh said the clash there yesterday and another incident in Agra today had nothing to do with land acquisition or payement of compensation and the process for the same were completed yesterday only.

Reading out chief minister Mayawati's statement, Singh said she had criticised all opposition parties for raking up the issue without verifying facts.

"The opposition parties should act maturely and should take all information before issuing statements against the government so that people did not react to their propaganda. This might create law and order problem", the statement said.

He said there was no incident in Tappal (Aligarh) and in Mathura and Agra there were minor incidents but due to others reasons and not due to land acquisition.

"The acquisition of land in Bhatta Parsaul village was done with mutual consent and the process for the same was completed in 2010 itself and villagers were paid compensation Rs120 crores and Rs180 crores respectively", he claimed. He said that till now 22 persons have been arrested in the connection with the clash in GB Nagar.

Asked about the reasons for the agitation going on in Bhatta Parsaul, Singh said it was for demanding development of the village and transport, sewer and other facilities.

About the toll in yesterday's incident, Singh said that only four persons have died so far and 30 policemen were undergoing treatment at various hosptials besides others.
