Four people have been arrested in yet another case of land fraud being investigated by the special investigation team (SIT) of the Ahmedabad rural police.

The accused are said to have 'purchased' 16 bighas of land, worth almost Rs4 crore, for Rs15 lakh. However, the investigation revealed that the accused didn't pay a single penny to the victim.

This is the latest land-grab scam in Ahmedabad, which has witnessed umpteen number of land-grab cases in the last couple of years. According to cops, one Dinesh Devipujak of Mathia village in Sanand had lodged an FIR with Sanand police stating that four people had cheated him out of 16 bighas of land.

Police said that the accused identified as Babu Senva, Naresh Chauhan, Ranjit Vaghela and Arjun Vaghela trapped the complainant’s grandfather Jeevabhai in February this year. They took him to the sub-registrar's office in Ahmedabad and made him sign a land deal in which it was shown that Jeevabhai had sold his 16 bighas of land for Rs15 lakh.

"The accused gave Jeevabhai a cheque of Rs2 lakh and got the land transferred to Babu Senva's name. But two months later Jeevabhai passed away. When his grandson Dinesh inquired about the land's documents, he found that the land had already been sold. Then Dinesh approached us to enquire into the matter," police official informed.

During investigation, the SIT — formed especially to look into land scams in Ahmedabad district - found that Jeevabhai never received any money for the land. It was also revealed that even the cheque of Rs2 lakh handed over to Jeevabhai was taken back by the accused.

However, Sanand police inspector AR Desai said that the matter is still under investigation. He said that after consulting the sarpanch of the village it was found that the value of the land is around Rs4 crore. Since there is no witness to confirm the dealings between Jeevabhai and the accused, cops are still investigating how the land was bought or grabbed.

However, Desai said that Ranjit and Naresh are the brains behind this case as they had prepared the possession documents of the land in Babu Sevna's name. Sevna, who works as a daily labourer, is in no position to buy the land even for Rs15 lakh.
