The family of CRPF trainee Sunil Kumar was already going through a harrowing time after they got the news that their 19-year-old boy had died while training in Allahabad on August 23. The family, however, was in for a bigger shock when the body that arrived in a coffin was that of a “40-year-old man with grey hair”.

Sunil, who hailed from Keezhmuttan village near Paingulam in Kanyakumari had reportedly died during training in Allahabad on August 23, but his family was informed only on August 28. Sunil’s body arrived at his residence on Monday.

The coffin had a photograph of Sunil attached on it. However the body did not resemble that of Sunil, the CRPF trainee’s family told inspector Muthusamy, who had taken the body to the house.

Sunil’s family refused to accept the body even though Muthuswamy tried to convince them that the body looked different as it was bloated and decomposed. Soon, the villagers too joined in to affirm that the body was not Sunil’s. Finally, Muthuswamy was forced to keep the body in a mortuary in Nagercoil.

According to unconfirmed reports, the bodies could have got exchanged after the post-mortem. The family fears that Sunil’s body may have been sent to Bihar by mistake and already cremated.

Authorities have now decided to conduct another post-mortem to establish the true identity of the unclaimed body.

A CRPF recruitment camp had selected Sunil and his older brother Kabilan for training. While Sunil was sent to Allahabad, his brother was sent to Kerala. Sunil had told his family that he would return home after completing the training on August 24.

However, he reportedly collapsed after completing a 16-km run and was rushed to hospital on August 23. CRPF authorities informed his family on August 28 that Sunil had died and they could collect his body at Trivandrum airport in Kerela.
