In what can be called a slap in the face of city police, as many as seven incidents of fake cops cheating people of their jewellery were reported on Friday. Just a day before, joint commissioner police, Zone-I had issued a circular to all PIs asking them to report on duty early to check the menace. Five of the seven incidents that took place on Friday were reported from areas falling under Zone-I.

As if to prove that they were not afraid of the police, three impostors posing as cops robbed a woman of gold jewellery worth Rs65,000 near Courtyard Marriot hotel in Satellite. The hotel is just a stone's throw from Satellite police station.

The victim Jayshree Kansara, 50, a resident of Sarthi Avenue, Satellite, was on her way home at 8:00 am when the fake cops stopped her saying police checking was going on and that she had to be produced before a senior police officer. "They asked me to take off my bangles and put them in my bag. While I was doing so, they snatched the bangles and drove away on their motorcycle," Kansara stated in her complaint.

Another woman, Uma Modi, a resident of Om Tower, Satellite, was looted of her gold chain and a pair of gold bangles, in the same manner near Star Bazar at 10 am. The ornaments were collectively worth Rs70,000. Another resident of Satellite, Kanta Shah, was also robbed of gold bangles worth Rs60,000 by fake cops near Shyamal Crossroads on Friday morning.

In Vastrapur, one Tulasi Ramnami, 72, a resident of Bodakdev, was robbed of her gold bangles worth Rs35,000 near Vastrapur lake at 7:00 am. Two motorcycle-borne men, claiming to be policemen, stopped Ramnami near Sanjivani Hospital and told her that there had been a murder in the area and, hence, police checking was going on.

"They asked me to take off my pair of bangles and put them in my bag. As I proceeded to do so, they snatched the bangles and fled," Ramnami stated in the complaint lodged with the Vastrapur police.

In the second such incident in the same area, 72-year-old Maheshwari Ramkiran, also a resident of Bodakdev, was looted of her gold bangles worth Rs50,000 by fake cops. However, in a notable departure from the other incidents, the impostors were driving a Maruti Van instead of a motorbike.

One case each was reported from Maninagar and Isanpur. The fake policemen made away with gold bangles worth Rs75,000.
