Expelled from his institute and frustrated with several futile pleas to be taken back, undergraduate student Deepak Mishra, who was admitted in 2007 to the Graphic Design department at the National Institute of Design (NID), threatened to commit suicide by jumping off the institute's hostel terrace on Wednesday.

Deepak was earlier expelled from NID in March 2009 for hitting the then hostel warden YN Vivekananda. Frustrated after NID declined his requests to take him back in, he managed to sneak into the campus at around 3 pm, went to the hostel terrace and declared that if the top authorities didn't agree to speak with him, he would jump off the terrace.

Alarmed at this, the institute's director, registrar and other officials rushed to the spot. After requesting the 108 emergency services for help, the officials managed to talk the boy into coming down to discuss the matter with them. Speaking about the meeting with the student, registrar of academics at NID Vijaya Deshmukh said, "He was again asking to be taken back, the way he has been persisting since past one year."

Though no formal police complaint was lodged against the boy, the institute stood firm on its earlier decision of expulsion. The student was later taken away from the institute by his local guardian.

While the student could not be contacted, his father DN Mishra, a manager with a national bank in Patna told DNA, "Deepak was very normal and I can't understand how all these things are happening with him. My son has wasted around one year and that was long enough a punishment for what he did. NID has told him to go and join some other institute but it is easier said than done. I can do nothing more than to pray that the institute be considerate and save the life and career of my son," said the father.
