The state government has reiterated the long-pending demand of shifting of the headquarters of Western Railway from Mumbai to Ahmedabad.

In a charter of demands submitted to the railway ministry recently, the state government says, "Gujarat has frequently demanded shifting of the headquarters of Western Railway from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, but this has not been accepted yet. It is necessary that the headquarters of any organisation should be located at a central place within its jurisdiction so that it can be easily reached from any part. The shifting of the headquarters from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will achieve this objective and also reduce congestion in Mumbai.''

The state government has also repeated its demand for the development of Sabarmati railway station.
