Two more youngsters would have been added to the student suicide statistics of the city. But, the immediate action by some fishermen ensured that the two class XII students lived to tell the tale.

The two – Kailash Damor and Sangeeta Bariya jumped into the Sabarmati on Tuesday for fear of performing badly in the boards.
Before jumping into the river the duo had consumed an insecticide. Interestingly, they had mixed the insecticide with water before consuming it. As luck would have it as soon as the duo took the death plunge from the Subhash Bridge, some fishermen on the banks of the river saw them and immediately ran to their rescue.

The duo was immediately taken to the civil hospital where they regained consciousness.

Sources said that while Damor is a student of Parimal high school, Bariya is a student of Gayatri Vidyalaya.

Damor, a student of commerce had received her exam receipt but
Bariya, an arts student was yet to receive her exam receipt, sources said.

Sources said that Damor's father worked in a private firm as a peon.  Bariya's father is an armed constable in Surendranagar district.

Sources said that the girls came up with the suicide plan when they were alone in their homes near Sabarmati. Their mothers were not in town. They had gone to their native village for some work, sources said.

Investigating officer in the case, PSI RB Kapadia of the Sabarmati police station told DNA, "We have not recovered any suicide note from the duo. " The duo told us that they took the extreme step fearing failure in the boards

It should be noted that recently the city has registered a spate of suicide cases, mostly involving students who failed to cope with exam pressure.
