Eight killed in road accident in Andhra Pradesh

Eight persons including two children were killed and nine others injured when the SUV they were travelling in hit a stationary lorry in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh in the early hours today, police said.

The incident occurred at around 3am on NH-5 near Kavali town of Nellore district when the SUV carrying 17 persons (including seven children) hit the lorry from the rear-side, resulting in the death of seven persons on the spot, they said.

Another person died while undergoing treatment at Kavali town, police said.

Nine other occupants of the vehicle who were injured in the incident were admitted to different hospitals, Kavali Circle inspector N Krishna Kishore Reddy, told PTI.

The victims, all relatives from Kurnool and Prakasam districts of the state, were on a pilgrimage to Annavaram, Vijayawada and Tirupati as part of a tonsuring ceremony, the police officer said.

The SUV driver, who was injured in the incident and also the lorry-driver who parked the lorry in the centre of the road would be booked in the case, the CI said.
