"In line with the British Council's mission to promote the global sharing of knowledge and ideas, each winner will receive Rs3 lakh towards the cost of their tution fees," Vivek Singh, Head Examination Services, British council, West India said today.
The awardees will begin a full-time postgraduate programme at an overseas university of their choice that uses IELTS as a part of its admission requirement and as a measure of English language proficiency.
The winners were announced at a ceremony last night in Chennai by British Deputy High Commissioner (Chennai) Mike Nithavrianakis and Paul Seller, director, British Council (South India), Singh said.
IELTS is the world's leading English language test designed to evaluate ability to communicate in English for education, immigration and professional accreditation worldwide.
Recognised by over 6,000 institutions in 125 countries globally as a reliable measure of English skills, the British Council's IELTS is immensely popular with Indian students and the the choice of universities is wide for them with over 2,500 institutions and programmes in US alone, accepting IELTS.
"Committed to supporting young people in realising their aspirations, the British Council IELTS Scholarship Award was
launched with an objective of assisting Indian students to study at Universities abroad," he said.
The award winners are: Sibi Arasu (Tamilnadu), Rajaram Belakawadi Satish Rama (Karnataka), Baidehi Roy (West Bengal),
Ankur Aggarwal (Uttar Pradesh), Saee Haldule and Sneha Kadaba
(Maharashtra), Indrajit Bose (Orissa), and Deepak Nagappan
Anitha from Kerala.
The scholarship programme directly benefits both individuals and countries from which they come and at the same time promotes higher education links between India and other countries, Singh said.
Scholarships are also being awarded in three other Asian countries--Republic of Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam, with a total
investment of 60,000 pounds or $90,000 (Rs 42 lakh) including for India, he added.
