The teachers of municipal primary schools in the city will prove their teaching competency on April 19. More than 4,000 teachers of Ahmedabad municipal schools will undergo this competency test.

The papers will be set by the education department in Gandhinagar. The teachers will have to solve a 150 marks objective style question paper in one and a half hours. The answer-sheets will be checked at CRC (Cluster Resource Centre) level. The competency test was supposed to be conducted on April 21, but it has been brought forward as it clashes with the dates of the census-taking.

The school board has classified the teachers in three categories - lower primary, higher primary and principals. The lower primary group comprises teachers in Std 1-4, while the higher primary group has teachers in Std 5-7.

In December 2009, the school board did not divide the teachers into three groups. At that time, the teachers skipped the examination as their union was not taken into confidence. This time the school board authorities have discussed matters with the union before announcing the test dates.

The main reason for not giving the exam in December was that the teachers felt that poor scores  in the test would affect their teaching/salary prospects.

The school board will take the assistance of the Gujarat Secondary Education Board for the conduct of this examination. The board wants principals of secondary schools to work as supervisors.

Manu Raval, chairman of Ahmedabad Municipal School Board, said that the aim of the test was to keep teachers alert. "It would show us where the teacher stands, so that we can provide him/her necessary training," said Raval.

Raval also said that teachers need to know the current trends in all fields of life and must have knowledge of recent developments.

During the budget session of AMC, Congress corporator from Raikhad, Liyakat Ghori, had raised a query about the board's decision to take the competency test.

He wanted to know under which clause of BPMC Act was the school board holding such a test. However, he did not get an answer to his questions.
