You are under watch and being followed the moment you enter the Asaram ashram in Sabarmati. Given the bad press that the ashram sadhaks have received following their various protests, which invariably turn violent, the ashram authorities are suspicious of all and sundry who enter the ashram premises.

So much so that the ashram authorities have hired private detectives to keep a close tab on those entering the ashram.    It should be noted that earlier on Thursday a protest by sadhaks had turned violent leaving 20 police officials injured.

A private detective posted near the main gate of the Asaram ashram, told DNA that his job involves letting the ashram authorities know the path that a visitor takes the moment he enters the ashram.

"A conference line connects the main gate to the office staff of the ashram. They are given minute details about everything that a visitor does," said the detective.

Sources in the ashram said that the detectives go around the ashram in civvies but most of them are stationed at the entry points of the ashram.

"A close vigil is kept near the drinking water facility, kitchen, gurukul, toilets and near the STD booth of the ashram," a source said.

A source said that on an average 10 to 12 detectives are stationed to keep a watch on visitors. "As soon as a 'suspect' (that is a policemen or media person) enters the ashram, the detectives, dressed in civvies, follow them and report all their movements," a source said. The ashram has hired a professional security agency for the job. A detective on condition of anonymity told DNA that they report to one Gokulbhai who sits within the ashram premises.

Meanwhile, the Asaram ashram wore a deserted look on Saturday unlike the usual 'Agiyaraas.'  The ashram hardly had any visitors. "Usually on every 'Agiyaraas' people throng the ashram but this is the first time that the number of visitors has dropped drastically during the Agiyaraas," a tea vendor outside the Ashram told DNA.

Absconding sadhaks get a makeover to escape cops
To evade arrest the Asaram sadhaks who brutally beat up police officials on Thursday, returned to the ashram with a different look so as to avoid being caught by the police.

"They shed their sadhak garb and came to the ashram as common citizens," a source in the police department told DNA. "We suspect many people who had returned to the ashram came there to collect their belongings," the source said.

16 sadhaks arrested, seven on remand; rest sent back
Of the over 300 Asaram sadhaks detained after police searched the ashram on Friday, the Gandhinagar police arrested 16 sadhaks who were allegedly part of the mob that attacked police. Seven of them were sent to police remand.  "All the arrested were the part of the violent rally and had assaulted the police officials," inspector general of police, Gandhinagar range, AK Sharma told DNA. Sharma said that the sadhaks will be interrogated. "We want to know whether it was a pre planned rally. We will also look into the history of sadhaks who do not belong to the state."
