Rubbing salt into the wounds of BSP, Congress leader Digvijay Singh today said the Election Commission should have considered freezing the party's symbol elephant rather than just ordering to cover it in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.

"If Election Commission thought that it may affect the verdict then they should have considered freezing the elephant symbol. It would have been more logical," he told reporters.

The Congress general secretary noted that elephant was a "free" symbol as the AGP of Assam also has the same symbol.

Asked whether the Congress party would make such a demand to the EC, he said it would be "too  rivolous".

He also clarified that Congress party had not complained about the BSP symbol to the poll body.

He saw nothing wrong in the decision to provide 4.5% reservation, but refused to say anything about the ECs decision to stay the implementation till the elections are over.

"The Election Commission has taken the decision in their own wisdom. We respect that wisdom," he said.

Singh's comments on the elephant symbol came on a day when the BSP also expressed its unhappiness over the EC directive though for a different reason.

BSP hit out at the Election Commission, claiming its order was in violation of the law and demanded that the decision be reconsidered.

Dubbing the Commission's decision as "unjustifed and one-sided", the BSP said it has demoralised the party and left Dalits and backwards "cheated".

The ruling party also appeared to raise questions on EC's intentions to hold free and fair Assembly polls in UP starting next month.
