EC sends personalised letters to voters in Delhi asking them to vote

In a unique initiative, Delhi's State Election Commission has started sending personalised letters to each of the 1.12 crore voters requesting them to vote in the civic polls to be held on Sunday.

The personalised letters, being delivered by EC staff in 272 wards, have all the required details for voters like location of polling station, serial number in the voters' list and name of the ward.

The Commission started distribution of the letters early this week and the whole exercise would be completed by tomorrow.

"We are sending the letters to each and every voter requesting them to vote in the municipal polls. The letters contain all required information so that people do not face any inconvenience in exercising their franchise," an EC official said.

The Commission had decided to send the letters to encourage people to vote and address their apprehension about whether their names figure in the voters' list or not.

"Now people would know that their names figure in the voters list. They would know where the polling booth would be. So we hope the initiative would result in better polling percentage," said the official.

A dismal 42% voters had exercised their franchise during 2007 civic polls.

The Commission has already launched an advertisement campaign in print and electronic media exhorting people to vote in the civic polls.
