The Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in collaboration with Earth Charter International, will host an International Conference in the city from November 1-3 where some 100 foreign delegates of Earth Charter World Committee and 300 Indian members, will aim at reaching a higher level of awareness of sustainable development and reviving and strengthening the principles of Earth Charter.

Titled 'Ethical Framework for a Sustainable World,' the conference will have thematic workshops focussing on sustainability challenges faced by various sectors. The conference is significant as it will be attended by UNESCO chairperson Charles Hopkins, Steven Rockfeller, chair, Earth Charter Council and Erna Wiltoelar, United Nation's Special Ambassador for Millennium Development Goals in Asia Pacific.

A special effort has been made to include the younger generation in the discussions. “We will be including youngsters in all our major discussions. They can learn and share ideas as that's the basic concept of the conference." explained Kartikeya Sarabhai, director of CEE. The charter will also have workshops for 35 school children and as many teachers, informing them about better ways to impart environment education, which is mandatory in India.

At present the EC is a people's declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global community. In 2012, the all- important UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), called 'Rio+20' will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Asked if in the coming years the Earth Charter would want to expand its horizon or evolve as a global watchdog, Kartikeya told DNA, "We hope to get such suggestions during the conference and hopefully execute them through right channels." Mallika Sarabhai and her dance troupe, Darpana will give foreign guests a taste of India culture at the conference.
