The magistrate's court on Monday rejected the bail application of Sanjay Patel, one of the top builders of the city, and Dr Bhadresh Shah, an orthopedic surgeon. The two were arrested by the crime branch in connection with the dummy writers scam.

Patel is Komal's father, one of the two students who were caught in March 2008, faking a fracture in the hand during the class XII (science) board exams. Komal, along with Harsh Kotak, had hired dummy writers to write the exams for them after faking the injury.
The prosecution accused Shah of giving a false certificate of injury to the two. The crime branch on Friday had arrested Shah and Patel for their alleged involvement in the case.

Mitesh Amin, advocate for Patel told the court "There are hundreds and thousands of such cases but this case is being unnecessarily hyped. Even if a crime was committed, these people have not cheated anybody of their money. Patel has already been punished as his daughter has been disqualified from appearing in the exam till 2011 while he himself is in jail."  Counsel for Shah, Sanjay Thakkar said that the doctor has a clean record and is not involved in any criminal case.

However, public prosecutor YK Vyas objected to the bail plea on moral grounds and said, "Affluent people are keen to get good grades for their children even if they are undeserving. This is a crime against society and needs to be curbed."
