In a case of drunken driving, two youths were killed and three others seriously injured early today when the "drunk" driver lost control of their vehicle and rammed into central verge of the road in the capital.

The incident was reported from Ring Road near Salim Garh at around 2 am, Satyendra Garg, joint commissioner of police (traffic), said. "The injured persons were found drunk," he said.

Garg said that seven youths from North Delhi had gone to attend a marriage party in Haryana and were returning home when the incident took place.

"The youths apparently had too much of drinks. While returning, the vehicle was being driven too fast. At Ring Road near Salim Garh, the vehicle lost balance and hit the central verge, overturned and got badly damaged," he said.

"The youngster, who was driving and one of his companions died before they could be given medical assistance. Three of their companions are in ICU and two were lucky to escape with minor injuries. Medical examination of all injured persons revealed that they were under influence of liquor," he said.

Garg said field officers told him that the vehicle must have been driven at 100 or more km per hour at the time of accident.

"It is painful to come across cases of unnecessary deaths on the road everyday. At the time of accident roads are largely empty. A combination of drinks and speed has caused deep anguish at least in five families. All this is absolutely avoidable," he said.

"Before people blame traffic police, let me admit our presence on roads at that hour is very minimum. Should not society ensure that these unnecessary deaths do not happen. Who will bell the cat: parents, youth themselves, police or system where people become aware that life is too precious to be wasted in irresponsible behaviour," he added.
