In a major crackdown, officials of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of Ahmedabad zone have reportedly arrested one of the kingpins of a wide-spread drug peddling racket operating from Ajmer in Rajasthan. This gang was involved in smuggling narcotics into Gujarat.

According to sources, one Vinay Chauhan was recently arrested by NCB officials from Ajmer. His name had cropped up during the seizure of 21 kg of charas being smuggled into Gujarat early this year. The officials had intercepted a car on Gujarat-Rajasthan border in February this year. The contraband was hidden in an Indica car.

"At that time, we had arrested two people - Sarfaraz Ahmed Pathan, a resident of Sarangpur, and Mukesh Khinchi, a resident of Ajmer. Sarfaraz was Chauhan's driver. They were transporting the illicit consignment to Ahmedabad from Ajmer," sources said.

According to sources, most of the contraband (charas, ganja among other drugs) are smuggled into Gujarat from Kashmir via Ajmer. There have been many instances in which the NCB officials have foiled smuggling attempts.

However, the kingpins have always remained at large.
In many failed attempts to pump charas into Gujarat, the NCB officials have traced the origins to Kashmir.

In one of the biggest the largest haul of contraband to be seized in the state, 90 kg of Kashmiri charas was found in an apple-laden truck in 2009. While in 2007, 112 kg charas had been seized.

However, in most of the cases only drivers and cleaners of carriers have been arrested. Chauhan's arrest of Vinay Chauhan is expected to reveal many secrets of narcotics smuggling.
