It seems thieves in the city are getting choosy. How else could you explain a theft in Vastrapur where a thief did not bother to touch gold and silver ornaments and escaped with just $1100 and 200 Euros.

Incidentally, Chinese and Japanese currencies were also available for the taking but the choosy thief decided they were not worth the effort. The thieves also did not bother with dollar denominations of 20.

The incident came to light after a theft was reported at Aditya Bungalows near SAL Hospital in Vastrapur. The theft was reported on Friday morning, when Kalpesh Kalasia, a contractor working in Gandhidham and a frequent international traveller, found the bag in which he kept the US dollars missing from the ground floor of the house. Currencies worth Rs65,000 were reported stolen.

"The thief may be well-versed with the value of the currencies and hence escaped only with dollar currency notes of 100 denomination," said senior police inspector, Vastrapur police station, BK Purohit.

He said the thief did not touch 20$ currencies that were kept along
with the stolen dollars. The complaint filed by Ritu Kalasia mentioned that the couple had accidentally left the back door open and this is how the thief must have entered the house.

But the police sources said they suspect it to be the handiwork of someone who knew about the exact number of currencies carried by Kalasia. The police are investigating the matter and are hopeful of cracking it soon.
