The police have arrested a man, stated to be the driver of a dissident leader of the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), for possession of drugs.

Acting on a tip off, the police searched Bikash Bhujel, driver of SDF leader Bhoj Raj Rai, at Namchi last night and seized 30 capsules of a drug hidden in a packet of cigarette, inspector general of police (Law and Order) SD Negi said today.

Rai, a former MLA, has been in the limelight recently for raising a banner of revolt against chief minister and SDF president Pawan Kumar Chamling's leadership.

Rai said Bhujel was not his driver at present as he had fired him sometime back for not performing his duties properly.

A case has been registered under section 9(b) of Sikkim Drug Act 2006 against Bhujel, Negi said adding the 21- year-old driver has been under surveillance for over a month for his alleged involvement in drug peddling.
