A 27-year-old man, who wanted money to get married, allegedly tried to cheat his employer by replacing original diamonds worth Rs17.6 lakh with Rs1.45 lakh worth of American diamonds. He was arrested after the sales manager lodged a a complaint.

The accused,  Kiran Rasiklal Kothari, a resident of Bachani Nagar in Malad (East),  worked in the diamond assorting department of CM Jewels, situated at SEEPZ, MIDC in Andheri (East).

According to deputy commissioner of police KMM Prasanna, Zone X, complainant Bhatubhai Mehta, head of sales and operation department of the company, approached the police on May 31 stating that some of the diamonds which he had given to his workers for assorting were stolen. “We began inquiring who had done the assorting last.
During investigations, Kothari’s name came to light,” said senior inspector, Pradeep Suryavanshi, MIDC police station.

Kothari was picked up on June 4, after which he reportedly confessed to the crime. The police have recovered almost 90% of the stolen property. “He said that he wanted to get married and was short of money. Since checking in SEEPZ is lenient on Sundays, he hid the American diamonds in his socks, and put them in place of the real ones,” said Suryavanshi.
