The in-charge director general of police, Chitranjan Singh, has reacted to the accusation made by Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia, who recently stated that the law and order situation in the state is deteriorating.

Singh has revealed that the crime rate in the state has been decreasing during the past five years.

Singh also clarified the government’s role in the alleged connection of the Ponzi accused with chief minister Narendra Modi.

In an official write-up, the state DGP has stated that Moinuddin Saiyad, the accused in the multi-crore Ponzi scheme, was arrested by the Gujarat police on April 1, 2012 and was in police remand for 14 days.

“The case is being investigated by the economic wing of CID (Crime),” Singh said.  Singh also mentioned the facts and figures about the crime scene in the state. Crime incidents including murder, attempt to murder, loot, theft, rioting, kidnapping and others have gradually decreased, he said.

The number of such crimes recorded in 2007 was 81,021; 83,568 in 2008, 76,875 in 2009, 72,594 in 2010 while in 2011 the figure was 73,657.

The crime detection ratio too has increased nominally in these years.

Singh said that according to the figures of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Gujarat ranks 15th in number of murder cases and 25th in attempt to murder cases.

“The state’s crime rate is much lower than other states in the country.”

Reacting to the allegation made by Modhwadia on the issue of missing kids in the state, Singh mentioned the work that was recently done by the CID (Crime) and railways.

“A website has been created that will help various police departments to communicate with each other. Fresh guidelines have also been issued to investigate such cases,” Singh said.
