Delhi sizzles at 41.6 C

Today's maximum was six degrees above normal and up by 1.01 degree Celsius from yesterday's 40.5 degrees as hot winds blew across the city making it more miserable for those who ventured out.

Mercury soared to a scorching 41.6 degree Celsius in the national capital today, forcing the denizens to stay indoors as it touched the season's highest temperature so far.
   
Today's maximum was six degrees above normal and up by 1.01 degree Celsius from yesterday's 40.5 degrees as hot winds blew across the city making it more miserable for those who ventured out.
   
The Weatherman said today's maximum was the highest for this day in the past five years.
   
The minimum also touched this month's high at 24.4 degree Celsius, four degrees above normal. Yesterday, the lowest temperature was 23.3 degree Celsius.
   
"It is too hot. Driving a motorcycle in the afternoon was a cruel experience for me. The hot winds made it more horrible," said Sanjeev Verma, a media professional who was going to his Connaught Place office.   

The hot weather forced many people to cancel their Sunday outings. "I was planning to go to a market for some purchasing. After experiencing this heat, I changed my plans," said Shruti Aggarwal, an accountant staying in Mayapuri.
   
The humidity levels oscillated between 15 and 49%. The Weatherman predicted that sky will be partly cloudy tomorrow with maximum and minimum temperature expected to be around 40 and 23 degrees respectively.
   
Last year, the maximum temperature in April had touched 43.5 degrees which was the second highest in the past 65 years. The all-time record for the month was recorded on April 29, 1941 when the mercury touched 45.6 degree Celsius.
   
April began on a 'hot note' with temperature touching higher levels. The mean temperature for the month of April is 36.2 degree Celsius (maximum) and 21.5 degrees (minimum).
   
The maximum crossed the 40 degree mark two days ago when it touched 40.1 degree Celsius.
   
The denizens also experienced unusually hot days last month, which the MeT Department said was the second warmest March for the city since 1901.
   
The mercury had touched 39.2 degree Celsius on March 21 this year which was the second highest maximum temperature in the month of March in the past 65 years.
