Fake notes with a face value of over Rs67lakh have been seized by Delhi Police so far this year with investigators indicating that the gangs were now more into printing counterfeit currency of Rs500 denomination than Rs100, reversing a four-year-old trend.

According to Delhi police statistics, fake notes with a face value of Rs67,66,630 were seized in the capital till September 15 as against last year's total figure of Rs59,19,000 fake notes.

"This year marks a change in trend. Last four years, Rs100 fake notes were seized more compared to Rs500 notes. However, this year the seizure of Rs500 notes is almost
double that of Rs100," a senior police official said.

This year, 7,076 fake notes of Rs500 denomination were seized as against 4,383 of Rs100 denomination. Last year, the figure was 6,852 and 8,013 respectively while the figure for 2007 was 7,373 and 9,070 respectively.

Interestingly, only two fake notes of Rs10 denomination and three fake notes of Rs20 denomination were recovered this year.

A total of 35 cases were reported this year so far in which 24 cases have been worked out arresting 44 people. In 2008, there were 41 cases out of which 11 are yet to be worked out. The official said in majority of the cases, the origin of the fake notes was Pakistan and the gangs first smuggled the money to either Bangladesh and Nepal and then transported to India through the "porous" border.

Recently, counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs7lakh was detected in the Citi Bank branch operating out of Jeevan Bharti building in Connaught Place by its officials who approached the police.
