Lawyers of all six Delhi district courts today observed a day-long strike to protest against an alleged attack on two advocates by a petrol pump employees and lodging of the case against assailants under milder charges.

The Co-ordination Committee of all Bar Associations of Delhi called for the day-long strike alleging that lawyers, Neeraj Sharma and Rajeev Sharma, were brutally assaulted by the employees of a petrol pump at New Ashok Nagar in East Delhi.

The committee's chairman IS Saroha said the strike was successful and they have demanded for strict action against the police officials who, he said, misbehaved with lawyers and initially did not register the FIR.

"The day-long strike at all the six district courts here was successful and the lawyers abstained from the work. We have demanded strict action against erring police officials, including the station house officer (SHO) of the New Ashok Nagar police station," Saroha said.

Alleging misbehaviour by police, when the advocates reached police station for lodging the complaint, Saroha said, "We are demanding SHO's suspension as he was completely involved in the offending act with the employees of the petrol pump."

The strike affected the court proceedings in all the six district courts -- Patiala House courts complex, Tis Hazari courts, Karkardooma, Rohini, Saket and Dwarka courts.

Terming the strike as "successful," former Delhi Bar Association President Rajiv Khosla said the police had tried to dilute the facts and were trying to protect the petrol pump employees.

"Police officials were trying to protect them (petrol pump employees). They (police) were acting in such a manner as if the lawyers are not entitled to lodge an FIR," Khosla said.

On inconvenience to the litigants due to strike, he said it was important because "if lawyers cannot save themselves from police high-handedness, how would the litigants believe that we can fight for them."

The incident that led to the strike happened on the night of April 5 when Neeraj Sharma and his friend were travelling from Delhi to Noida in a diesel-run car. On the way, they halted at the petrol pump.

The employees at the gas station filled petrol instead of diesel and when they asked them to clean the tank, the staff allegedly assaulted them.

Sharma said he and his friend fell unconscious and were taken to hospital by the PCR and then to the police station.

He alleged the police was uncooperative and registered their case under milder sections of the Indian Penal Code against the staff of the petrol pump and also registered a counter-FIR against the two advocates.
